Market volatility ebbs, investors stay alert
Asian equity markets were mixed on Friday after Wall Street stocks finished lower as the indexes failed to preserve early gains. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.4% but still down more than 5% so far this month. The Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 1% each. On the positive side, Japan's Nikkei 225 rallied over 2% after Bank of Japan Haruhiko Kuroda they don't expect the Fed policy to have a negative impact on Japan’s economy.

Investors cautious, dollar steady as Fed in focus
Wall Street stocks closed lower on Tuesday ahead of the outcome of the Federal Reserve meeting, with investors guessing when the central bank will raise interest rates and by how much. The Dow Jones shed 0.2%, the S&P 500 fell 1.2% and the Nasdaq Composite gave up 2.3%. In individual stocks, American Express rallied nearly 9% after fourth-quarter earnings surpassed estimates due to record credit card spending. Also, the company boosted forecasts for revenue and profits in 2022.

Dollar recovers slightly, stocks mostly positive
Asian markets were mixed on Monday as investors digested the latest economic data from China. The Shanghai Composite was 0.58% higher after the data showed that the country’s GDP grew 4% year-on-year and 1.6% quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter while retail sales grew 1.7% year-on-year in December, coming in below expectations. Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.68%, while the Nikkei 225 gained 0.74% ahead of the Bank of Japan policy decision due on Tuesday.

Stocks advance, dollar steadies ahead of inflation data
Asian equities followed Wall Street higher, aided by the persisting bullish bias in the oil market. The Shanghai Composite index gained 0.84% and the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo rose 1.9%. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong rallied 2.79% while the Kospi in Seoul added 1.54%. Of note, regional stocks edged higher even as the World Bank has cut its forecast for global economic growth this year to 4.1% from 4.3%, citing supply chain disruptions.

Stocks mixed while dollar demand caps recovery in gold prices
Asian equities were mixed on Monday as investors felt uncomfortable on worries the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates as soon as March – the expectations were reinforced by stronger-than-expected wages in the US. The Shanghai Composite index gained 0.39% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong advanced 1.08%. The Kospi in Seoul fell 0.95% and Sydney’s S&P ASX 200 lost 0.1%. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.

Stocks mostly positive, dollar steadies after a jump
Asian equities were mostly higher on Tuesday following Wall Street's record highs. MSCI's gauge of Asia Pacific stocks outside Japan advanced 0.4%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.77%, while South Korea’s Kospi was up less than 0.1%. In Australia, the ASX 200 jumped nearly 2%. In general, trading activity looks subdued as market players are looking ahead to the minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve's December monetary policy meeting due on Wednesday.

Stocks struggle for direction in thin trading
US stocks were little changed overnight in thin holiday trading. Still, as investors shrugged off concerns on the spreading omicron variant, the Dow and S&P 500 closed at all-time highs. The Dow gained 0.25% and has now risen six straight trading days. The S&P 500 finished 0.14% higher while the tech-heavy Nasdaq slipped less than 0.1%.

Asian equities were mostly lower on Wednesday following a mixed Wall Street session. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.21% even as the country registered a record surge in infections. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was 0.83% lower as market players eyed the continued debt crisis in the mainland’s property market. The Chinese Shanghai Composite shed nearly 15 as well.

Stocks struggle to see robust gains, dollar stays elevated
Asian equities have followed US indexes higher on Wednesday as Biden has provided some reassurances for investors. Still, regional equities gave up most of the early gains as virus-related concerns continue to deter buyers. The Shanghai Composite Index finished just below the flat-line, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo advanced less than 0.2% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose 0.57%. in part, risk sentiment has deteriorated after China announces sanctions on four US government officials.
